University of Minnesota
Education Sciences Building
Minneapolis, Minnesota

The University of Minnesota Education Sciences Building is a wonderful example of adaptive reuse on a historic building. The exterior of the 1924 building was restored and the interior was completely renovated. The building is in the historic Knoll district of the Minneapolis Campus. The original use of the building was for the Mineral Resources Research Center, and it was the birthplace for the taconite refining process.

The building has new mechanical and electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and fire protection systems. Renovation cost was $21.7 million. The 62,000 square foot, two-story building now includes offices, research labs and meeting rooms for the College of Education and Human Development. The two interior photos shown here highlight the amazing transformation of this building.
