University of Minnesota Duluth
Griggs Hall Addition
University of Minnesota Duluth’s highly anticipated addition to Griggs Hall has made room for another 280 on-campus residents. An issue began when the student population grew larger than what the on-campus living could support. The school has been renting out hotel rooms to accommodate, bringing an issue of traveling to and from campus, comfort, and overall university experience to these students.
The 69,500 square foot, seven-story building now includes a spacious lobby with fireplace seating and mail room, digital study rooms, a walk out basement with direct access to bike storage and laundry. Each floor is equipped with glass walled study lounges allowing views of Chester Bowl and Lake Superior.
To continue UMD’s sustainability efforts, Griggs G has energy efficient opening windows, substantial insulation and displayed power usage meters, allowing the dormitory to receive LEED Silver Certification.
